About this course
Content
Solution of the Navier-Stokes equations in three dimensions applied to civil engineering hydraulics related to hydropower plants. An example is air entrainment in spillways. Another example is velocity distributions in a river/reservoir due to hydropower regulations. The CFD program OpenFOAM will be used in the course.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge:
The candidate get knowledge about computational fluid mechanics and the use of OpenFOAM. Topics can be turbulence modelling, two-phase flow, discretization schemes etc.
Skills:
The candidate should master the use of OpenFOAM for computation fluid flow in hydraulic structures, and be able to program solvers for the program. Pre and post processing using ParaView and other programs should be learned.
General competence:
The candidate should be able to use knowledge from the discipline for scientific assignments and projects, and to publish research and development results in recognized national and international channels.
Teaching methods
The course includes an external course on OpenFOAM. This must be funded by the students supervisor. The course will also contain a project work.
