Basic Counselling Perspectives

How can one understand the counselling discipline in a historical perspective - and the discipline's relevance for our society now and in the future? Counselling happens continuously, in an informal way, where human beings meet and interact with each other. In everyday life, we both give and receive help in some form. In this course, a theoretical introduction is given to helping processes of different kinds, such as mentoring, coaching and guidance. Theories about relations and communication are essential, and various counselling traditions and approaches will be presented and discussed. The students will be given the opportunity to engage in practical activities and reflect on their own experience and development in light of theoretical concepts. There will be a focus on how to facilitate other people's learning, growth and development.

The student will acquire basic knowledge, skills and understanding related to the theoretical and practical perspectives of the counselling field. Moreover, the student will develop understanding of his/her own, and other people's, learning, growth and development.

Lectures and seminars. If 10 or fewer students attend the course in the first two weeks of teaching, the course will be given as an individual study course with supervision.
