About this course

Content

The course will provide the student with a theoretical and practical basis for using Norwegian and international infrastructure for geographical information in his work as a geomatician. The different parts are:

  • Introduction to the Norwegian infrastructure for geographical information, including standards and the technical framework where the SOSI method is central (SOSI - Samordnet Opplegg for Stedfestet Informasjon).
  • Principles for conceptual modeling of geographical information with emphasis on the modeling language UML (Unified Modeling Language).
  • Requirements for product specifications and metadata in 'Norge Digitalt'.
  • Relevant formats for geographic datasets.
  • Quality and usability for geographical information.
  • Overview of current portals for geographical information with emphasis on the national portal in 'Norge Digitalt' (geonorge.no).
  • Organization of 'Norge Digitalt' and 'Geovekst'.
  • Introduction to building information modeling (BIM).

Learning outcomes

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Be able to account for the content and organization of the Norwegian infrastructure for geographical information.
  • Be able to account for the national technical framework for geographical information where the SOSI method is central.
  • Be able to account for quality, control methods, areas of use and availability of geographical information.
  • Be able to describe the principles for conceptual modeling of geographical information with UML.
  • Know the main principles for modeling building information.
  • Know relevant international standards for geographical information.
  • Know the most important formats for geographic datasets.

SKILLS:

  • Be able to utilize the content of the national portal for geographical information (geonorge.no).
  • Be able to use basic functions in a desktop GIS application.
  • Be able to interpret the results from a quality control of a geographical data set.

GENERAL COMPETENCE:

  • Critical assessment of the quality and usability of geographical data.
  • Precise written and oral communication of subject matter.

Teaching methods

Class lectures will be prerecorded and published in the digital learning environment. Student guidance both in classroom and using relevant digital tools available in the digital learning environment. Three compulsory works required for documentation of skill requirements. Oral examination.
