In-Depth Course

Students may choose to specialize in modern German language or literature and culture. Modern German language: The course may address German grammar in its broadest sense, i.e. modern syntactic theories or second language acquisition with respect to German. Literature and culture: The course may address the works of an author, a time period, genre, literary themes, or issues in literary theory, cultural history or literature didactics.

Specialization in literature and culture:

KNOWLEDGE

The candidate

- has knowledge about and insight in a specialized theme in German literature or culture

- has knowledge about German culture and literary history.

SKILLS

The candidate

- is expected to be able to work with relevant sources and bibliographies using critical thinking

-is expected to be able to present and discuss academic problems in German

- is expected to be able to carry through an independent research project

- is expected to be able to apply literary scientific or culturally scientific methods to analyse selected texts

- is expected to be able to use an accurate conceptual system in German to discuss various types of texts and problems relating to research work

GENERAL COMPETENCE

The candidate

- is expected to be able to reflect on and analyze complex problems with the aid of a scientific conceptual system.

Specialization within modern German language:

KNOWLEDGE

The candidate

- has extended knowledge about theories, conceptual system and methods in modern German linguistics as well as specialized knowledge in a limited area

- is able to view their knowledge in a contrastive perspective (Norwegian - German)

SKILLS

The candidate

- is expected to be able to apply, analyze and compare different interpretations, theories and methods in modern German linguistics

- is expected to be able to use an accurate linguistic conceptual system in German relating to research work

- is expected to be able to look up relevant sources and bibliographies and use these critically while reasoning in German

- is expected to be able to reflect on linguistic differences between German and Norwegian, and to see how this can be used in written and oral usage of the German language

- is expected to be able to plan and carry out an independent research project limited to a specific area under supervision in German

GENERAL COMPETENCE

The candidate

- is expected to be able to reflect on and analyze complex problems with the aid of a scientific conceptual system.

Lectures and seminars. The course is primarily run as an online course. Students are expected to actively participate in discussions.

The course is taught exclusively in German.

Compulsory assignment: 1-3 activities that can be oral presentations and/or written assignments.
