About this course
Content
The course will provide students with an understanding of how German culture, history and politics have influenced and have been influenced by Germany's neighbouring states in Europe. Emphasis will be on the construction of the nation state, seen from various European perspectives and on the impact of WWII on political and cultural developments in Europe since 1945. The course seeks to study general trends in European cultural history, but focuses on German history, culture and politics after 1945.
Learning outcomes
KNOWLEDGE

-is able to formulate and discuss historical, cultural and political issues, both orally and written
-is able to utilise sources and secondary literature in accordance with bibliographical norms

The candidate
-has acquired a deeper understanding of the historical, cultural and political interaction between Germany and other European states
-is able to discuss key aspects of German and European political and cultural development
-is able to discuss Germany's impact and role in Europe after 1945.
Teaching methods
Lectures and group instruction based on active student participation, oral presentation and writing of assignments.
Compulsory assignment:
- 1 written assignment / project outline in German
- 2 oral presentations in German
- 75% mandatory attendance (in lectures and seminars)
The absence limit is intended to cover normal sick leave and similar situations. Therefore, you will not be granted valid absence from teaching based on a medical certificate, even if the absence is due to circumstances beyond your control.
In special cases, agreements for exemption can be made with the course coordinator, preferably at the start of the semester.
Approved obligatory assignment is valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester).
