German Literature and Culture 2

The course further develops students' ability to critically analyse literary works, non-fictional prose, films and/or other popular cultural expressions, building on German Literature and Culture 1 (TYSK1401). The main focus is on literary, cultural or social phenomena in German culture in the period from 1870 to 1945.

KNOWLEDGE

The candidate

- has knowledge of central concepts within literary and cultural studies

- has knowledge of central thematical and cultural issues from the period 1870-1945

PROFICIENCY

The candidate

- is able to analyse different forms of cultural expressions, within specific cultural, historical, or generic contexts

- can account for content and perspectives and discuss them in both oral and written German

- is able to conduct efficient literature searches, and to make correct use of sources in their own work

GENERAL COMPETENCE

The candidate

- is able to reflect on central concepts, genres and eras within literary and cultural studies, based on the course materials

Lectures, group sessions, supervision and oral presentations.

Compulsory assignment:

- 75% mandatory attendance (in lectures and seminars)

The absence limit is intended to cover normal sick leave and similar situations. Therefore, you will not be granted valid absence from teaching based on a medical certificate, even if the absence is due to circumstances beyond your control.

- 1 written assignment in German

- 1 oral presentation in German

Approved obligatory assignment is valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester).
