About this course

Content

The course is designed to give a broad theoretical and practical foundation within practical design and analysis of elements of water and wastewater treatment plants. The course will focus on; process understanding; design and operation of relevant water treatment processes (such as removal of natural organic matter, corrosion control and disinfection); design and operation of wastewater treatment processes (including physical-, chemical- and biological processes); and process combinations and configuration in treatment plants. Sludge handling and treatment will also be covered.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge: The students should have knowledge about design and operation of treatment plants for drinking water and wastewater. They should also have knowledge about quality standards for drinking water and wastewater, and how quality requirements can be met. The sudents should have in-depth process knowledge, how to design and optimise relevant processes, and how to configure processes in a treatment plant. The student should als have knowledge about relevant sludge treatment processes. Skills: The students should be able to design treatment plants for drinking water and wastewater at Norwegian and international conditions. This includes obtaining and applying appropriate design values, and making appropriate assumptions when needed. General competence: The student should have an in-depth knowledge on the relevant processes, and have a good understanding on how to combine and configure the different processes in a treatment plant.

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars, study groups and self studies. Compulsory exercises. The lectures and exercises are in English.
