About this course
Content
The course provides an introduction to GIS (geographic information system), what infrastructure for geographic information is and how it can be applied and provide benefit in construction processes. There is also an introduction to the collection and use of point clouds, as well as an introduction to the use of Python to automate GIS analyzes.
The course provides insight into available data sets are in the national infrastructure for geographical information in Norway (Geonorge / Norway digital), how these are specified, made available and can be used.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, participants shall independently have:
Knowledge about:
- Spatial data infrastructures in general
- The national spatial infrastructure for Norway: the exploitation of the available information in own projects
- the principles for specification, publication and legal rights part og an SDI
- how to evaluate own usability of available information and data sets
- basic GIS prinsiples: global spatial reference systems, cartography and GIS analysis.
- quality evaluation of the analysis
- how to represent areal plans in digital form according to accepted specifications
- how to use areal plans in building projects
- how to capture and process point-cloud based data
Skills to:
- identify, download and use information from an SDI
- represent areal plans in digital form
- use information from areal plans in building projects
- use Python scripting for user customization of GIS functionality
General competence:
- be aware of available spatial information and tools, and know what is relevant for building projects
Teaching methods
The course will use lectures, exercises, team work and discussions. The student activities will be concentrated on team-based project work, where CDIO principles are important. Relevant software will be given at start up. Actual software are ArcGIS and QGIS.
