About this course
Content
The course provides a basic introduction to the principles of digital representation of physical reality (buildings, infrastructure and terrain) and how such information can be specified and documented to ensure efficient information flow in construction processes.
The main part of the course is to learn conceptual modeling with Unified Modeling Language (UML) and EXPRESS / IFC. The course contains an introduction to how conceptual models are used to specify datasets in files and databases.
An important part of the information flow in construction processes is documentation of requirements for deliveries / data sets and validation to ensure that the deliveries are in accordance with the requirements.
The course will also provide a basic introduction to process modeling with Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN), to specify work processes and activities where the information deliveries will be used.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, participants shall independently have:
Knowledge:
- be able to explain and exploit the mail principles of conceptual modelling of information related to buildings and geography/terrain
- be able to explain the main standards for information handling for buildings and geomatics
- be able to explain data quality, availability and uses of the data
Skills:
- be able to use selected software for conceptual modelling, data editing/visualization and validation
- be able to create a UML/Class diagram for a specific case
- be able to use IFC conceptual model to document a selected part of a building
- be able to validate models and data sets based on specified requirements
General competence
- be able to exploit the possibilities inherent in the methods presented in the course
- be able to see limitations and suggest improvements in the methods presented
Teaching methods
The course uses lectures, exercises, group work and discussions. The teaching is largely organized as project work in groups, where CDIO principles are central. Great emphasis is given on discussions and cooperation between the students.
