About this course

Content

This course is an introductory course focusing on basic tools used in acoustics for the analysis of analogue / digital signals. The following fundamental concepts will be covered in detail: Time-and-frequency domain analysis, System Characterization, Auditory System fundamentals, Array processing, Sound Synthesis Principles, Machine Learning applied to classification of acoustic signals.

These concepts are essential and commonly used in a wide range of Acoustic applications: measurement applications, music synthesis, sound in VR, sound reproduction, remote sensing, animal sound classification.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge: Students will have a) a thorough knowledge of the theoretical concepts for processing signals and systems; b) an in-depth understanding of the different principles used for common practical applications in Acoustics; c) a basic understanding of analysis and modeling of acoustical signals.

Skills: Students can (1) select appropriate analysis techniques to implement in software, (2) implement Signal Analysis or System Characterization in software.

Teaching methods

Lectures, obligatory exercises and lab project.
