About this course

Content

Acoustical waves, the wave equation and its' solutions in open and closed spaces. Acoustical sources, propagation in air and under water. Acoustical measurement techniques and signal processing. Techniques for sound recording and sound reproduction of music and speech, description of music instruments. The anatomy of the ear, hearing and perception of sound. Introduction into sonar systems for the detection of fish and other objects under water, and into wireless underwater communication.

Learning outcomes

The course should lead to a knowledge of the physical laws and principles for the generation and propagation of sound in air and in water. The course also gives an overview over the major applications and areas where knowledge of acoustics is necessary. These include recording and reproduction of music and speech, technical acoustics and systems for communication, classification and detection under water, as well as propagation and reduction of noise.

Teaching methods

Lectures, class room exercises, obligatory laboratory exercises. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
