About this course

Content

The course will give students a thorough understanding of the fundamental radiation mechanisms of antennas and thereby get an overview of the special characteristics of the most common antenna types. One should also get a good construction background for such antennas as well as understanding of how the antennas are included in different radio systems Keywords:Fundamental antenna properties. Radiation from general current sources in free space. Array antennas. Analysis of some important types like electrically small antennas, resonant antennas, broadband antennas, and aperture antennas including reflector antennas. The method of moments for computing the current distribution on wire antennas.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge: The candidate has - Basic knowledge of antenna properties and mechanisms for radiation from general current sources in free space. - In-depth knowledge of how the basic antenna properties contribute to the performance of a radio system or a radio based sensor system (eg radar). - In-depth knowledge for the construction of resonant antennas, array antennas, broadband antennas, and aperture antennas including reflector antennas. - basic knowledge of the principles and practical methods for measuring the main antenna properties. Skills: The candidate can - analyze the most important antenna types and calculate radiation patterns of the most common antenna types. - Use data simulation tools to calculate the current distribution of antennas, the associated radiation patterns, and antenna impedance. - conduct antenna measurements in the laboratory or in the field to determine radiation characteristics and the impedance of the antennas. General competence: The candidate can - collaborate on conducting computer simulation exercises and practical antenna measurements at the laboratory. - write and deliver exercise and report from laboratory exercises
