About this course
Content
The theoretical basis for acoustic calculations with emphasis on analytical calculations. The following will be covered in detail: simple vibrating systems, vibrations of strings, bars and thin plates, the acoustic wave equation, and solutions to this. Reflection, transmission, refraction and radiation of acoustic waves. Sound in enclosed spaces such as rooms and duct systems. Introduction to room and building acoustics. Introduction to the use of numerical methods for calculating acoustic fields.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge: The candidate has (1) In-depth theoretical basis for generation, propagation, reception and damping of sound waves and mechanical vibrations. (2) Introductory knowledge about how to use general acoustic theory for common practical applications, including infrasound and ultrasound. Skills: The candidate can (1) specify and analyze mechanical systems like mass/spring combinations, vibrating strings, membranes, bars and plates. (2) know and assess simple methods for practical control of the acoustics in rooms and canal systems. (3) determine sound reflection and transmission through multi layered structures. (4) assess strategies against unwanted sound. General competence: The course gives experience in the use of theoretical/mathematical knowledge to solve practical engineering tasks.
