About this course
Content
A short introduction into wireless and mobile communications is given. The cellular concept is discussed. Radio propagation is addressed and statistical models for both large-scale and small-scale fading are presented, along with their channel capacity. Diversity principles and techniques are studied. A significant part of the course is devoted to radio transmission techniques, e.g. modulation, coding, interleaving, and equalisation. Various techniques for radio access are presented. Radio coverage and spectral efficiency of mobile communication systems are analyzed. Examples are taken from the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), UMTS, and WLAN systems.
Learning outcomes
The course shall give insights into the basic functions, design principles and trade-offs, optimization, and performance evaluation of modern mobile and wireless communication systems. The main emphasis is on transmission and reception of signals on the physical layer in wireless media, associated signal processing, resource allocation, and propagation issues, and important methods and protocols on the Medium Access Control (MAC) Layer.
Teaching methods
Lectures and exercises. If the exam is failed, the written exam may be replaced by an oral exam. The course may be held in English.
