About this course
Content
Internet network architecture, including for example network architecture, addressing, multicast, Content Delivery Networks (CDN), Software Defined Wide Area Networking (SD-WAN), routing (IGP/EGP), quality of service, Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), resource allocation/congestion control, and virtual private networks.
Learning outcomes
A. Knowledge:
1) To get a profound understanding of the ideas and philosophy behind the Internet architecture.
2) To get a profound understanding of the motivation, requirements, functionality, possibilities, and limitations for important protocols in TCP/IP networking. The focus is on protocols and architecture for routing, virtual private networks, multicast, CDN, SD-WAN, Quality of Service, resource allocation and congestion control.
3) To get a profound understanding of the addressing in the Internet.
B. Skills:
1) To be able to communicate, reason and think creatively about the various mechanisms used in the Internet protocols. (Ref. pin A2 above.)
2) To be able to identify and analyze strengths and weaknesses of the various mechanisms.
3) To be able to identify alternative solutions.
4) To be able to engineer small networks including configuration of the network nodes.
5) To be capable of doing performance measurements and traffic analysis of Internet traffic.
Teaching methods
The course has regular lectures combined with theoretical and practical exercises providing hands-on experience in network configuration and measurements. Potentially, some of the lectures may be given as remote teaching. Teaching methods like "flipped classroom" and "team based learning" may be applied in selected parts of the course.
The practical exercises are mandatory and graded. Written reports must be submitted individually. All submissions must be approved to qualify for the final exam.
