ICT in Engineering

The first part explains the use of UML to model bussiness and enigieering activities. How to exchange information over the Internet by using XML is illustrated. These tecniques are meant to be tools for analysis and management of both small and large enterprises, e.g. as tools for consultants. Examples are given from logistics, contruction and managment of oil plattforms. In this case project managment to a great extent is synonymous with information managment. Graphical models and drawings are included in the information base. In the second part, the course gives a basic introduction to data communication, local area networks, Internet, distributed systems, IP based applications and network security.

The aim is to supply a basic introduction to the principles of the methods and tools, currently used for information exchange and analysis in an engineering environment.

Lectures, exercises, project work. The result of the project work counts 50%. An oral presentation of the work may be requested. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
