About this course
Content
The course gives the theoretical and numerical treatment of advanced issues in marine acoustics. It covers nonlinear acoustics, reflection and scattering of simple geometrical bodies, particles and bubbles; diffraction and scattering of finite plates with even and rough surfaces. Furthermore, the course treats acoustic and elastic waves in solid media and waves in layered media. Particular emphasis is given to acoustics of marine sediment and porous media based on the Biot theory. Elements of non linear acoustics and the design of parametric sound sources are discussed. Finally, some of the more common methods for measurement and characterization of sea bottom properties are presented and discussed.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge: The candidate has: Good knowledge to understand the theoretical treatment of key issues in marine acoustics; - understand numerical models for wave propagation in layered acoustic and elastic media; - is familiar with remote sensing of the seabed's topography, structure and composition; - know typical applications of marine acoustics and seismic.
Skill: The candidate can: - Model and analyze wave propagation in layered acoustic and elastic media; - Use acoustic remote sensing of the seabed's structure and composition, and of oceanographic conditions: - use mathematical and theoretical knowledge to solve practical tasks related to applications in acoustic and elastic media.
General competence: The student can gain experience in using theoretical and mathematical knowledge to solve practical tasks related to sub-sea and seismic applications in acoustic and elastic media.
Teaching methods
Lectures, colloquium, compulsory and optinally homework problems and computer exercises in Matlab. Protfolio assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. The grade is based on a project report and final oral exam. If there is re-sit examination, it may be only oral.
