About this course

Content

The subject will treat visual communications, consisting of, creation, manipulation, representation, distribution and presentation of digital images, video, graphics and animations based on Multimedia Signal processing.
The following will be covered: Statistical characterization, parametric modeling and digital representation of digital images and video. Principles and algorithms for compression of digital images, video and graphics. Focus areas here will be predictive coding, transform coding and sub band coding, digital filtering, recovery and restoration of audio visual information. Combined processing of different media types in the form of manipulations and integration of audio visual information, synthetic imagery and graphics. Image perception and digital representation and evaluation of digital images, image compression, video compression, interactivity., multimedia communications with applications within mobile, wireless an d fixed networks. The multimedia framework and multimedia standardization. Examples will be taken from systems such as JPEG, JPEG2000, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and MPEG-21.

Learning outcomes

The course covers selected topics at doctoral level and is adapted individually according to the candidates' need for width and depth in his/her plan for academic training.
A. Knowledge:
The candidate's methodological and technological skills will be strengthened within the theme / themes of each implementation. The content should be in the forefront of its field and provide a basis for the candidate's analytical and / or constructive work.
B. Skills:
The candidate will be trained to actively use the algorithms and concepts for digital processing of audio visual information and is encouraged to take a critical attitude to established knowledge in the field. Specific skill goals for each implementation is specified and approved by IMEs-FU.
C. Competence:
As far as applicable, the candidate shall be able to put the course topics into a broader technological, economic / business and social context.
