About this course

Content

Measuring instruments, coordinate measuring machines, laser trackers, surface measurements, measurement uncertainty, geometrical tolerances in design and inspection, tolerance analysis, statistical process control, filters used in measurements, machine tool testing.

Learning outcomes

The students should acquire knowledge about measuring instruments and manufacturing metrology methods. One should know the principles of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing and understand the requirements to the measuring methods. The student should understand the requirements to metrology equipment and competence in a modern manufacturing company. The student should understand relations between geometrical product specifications, manufacturing processes, and inspection methods.

The students should know how to use simple measuring instruments and how to conduct measurements by use of a coordinate measuring machine. The students should know how to estimate measurement uncertainty by use of basic statistical methods and Monte Carlo simulations. The students should know how to calculate stacked tolerances.

Teaching methods

Lectures, assignments, and laboratory exercises.
