About this course

Content

The course covers the structure of modern IT-supported production systems. Process and operations planning: Descriptive methods, time study, standard time systems. Machine tools and automation: Machine tool structures, functions, features and principles of manufacturing systems design. Industrial robots: Structures and features. Computer Aided Manufacturing: The principles of computer numerical control (CNC), programming of CNC machine tools and industrial robots. Design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA): The relationship between design solutions and manufacturing cost, methods for DFMA analysis. Factory planning: Detail planning of workplaces and material flow.

Learning outcomes

The course shall give knowledge about:
- The structure of modern IT supported manufacturing systems
- Methods for work and time studies, process and operation planning
- The structure, properties and capabilities of machine tools and their usage in production systems
- The principles of numerical control (CNC) an CNC programming
- The structure and properties of industrial robots, robot programming and use in automation of part manufacturing and assembly
- Factory planning, detailed planning of workstation layouts and material flow
- Design for manufacturing and assembly

The course shall develop skills in:
- Creating process and operation descriptions and selection of manufacturing methods based on product drawings and specifications
- Investigations of machine tool capability
- Planning and programming CNC controlled operations
- Planning and programming of industrial robot operations
- Development of layout solutions for manual and automatic manufacturing operations.

The course shall give competence on:
- Development of manufacturing plants for industrial production
- The role of the factory in the total value chain
- The roles of humans and machines in modern industrial production

Teaching methods

Lectures, theoretical assignments, laboratory experiments. One part of the assignment work consist of a compulsory minprojects. This project counts 30% towards the final grade of the course. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
