About this course

Content

Manufacturing processes applied in casting, forging, extrusion, drawing, sheet-metal forming, joining, and layer manufacturing of products made from engineering materials. Material removal processes such as milling, turning, grinding, laser cutting, electroerosion and water-jet cutting. Fundamentals of machine tools and equipment used in manufacturing processes. Metrology and quality engineering.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge:
Basic knowledge about material properties and behavior in processing.
Knowledge about manufacturing processes for mechanical components.
Knowledge about suitable choice of process technology with respect to material, shape, quality, and cost.
Knowledge about product design to achieve low manufacturing cost and acceptable quality.
Basic knowledge about engineering metrology and quality assurance.

Skills:
Be able to carry out simulation of simple forging processes
Have the skills to plan manufacturing processes that includes different types of processing methods.
Have the skills to plan and carry out simple quality assurance procedures.

General competence:
Understand technological processes in the manufacturing industry.
Apply knowledge about manufacturing processes in the design of new products.
Have the competence to develop and improve manufacturing processes.

Teaching methods

Lectures, team-work, exercises, and laboratory work. Case-studies count for 20 % in the evaluation. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
