About this course

Content

Scientific basis and engineering practice for CO2 storage, CO2 phase behaviour and flow dynamics, engineering and geomechanics of geological storage, injection well design and operation, geophysical and geochemical monitoring, enhanced oil and gas recovery using CO2.

Learning outcomes

The students will understand engineered CO2 storage, including the (i) physics and engineering of CO2-rich gases, (ii) the geology and geomechanics of the storage complex and (iii) the monitoring of the reservoir and long-term storage integrity. The students will be capable of analytical assessments of CO2 storage capacity, site management and risk analysis. They should be able to interpret down-hole well data and geophysical monitoring data using case-studies. The students should be able to use analytical and mathematical methods, and tools as Excel and Matlab. Finally, as part of study teams, they should be able to design the disposal plan for a large-scale CO2 storage project.

Teaching methods

Lectures and exercises. Compulsory group design project. The course is evaluated by a reference group.
