About this course

Content

Pressure in sedimentary formations, prediction or pore and fracture pressure, setting and cementation of casing, conventional pressure control (equipment description, detection of unstable hole, well shut-in, killing procedures), mud transport of free gas and gas in solution, security aspects concerning drilling in deep water (cold environment, lowfracture gradients, high kick-frequency, hydrate formation, shallow gas and water currents), leaking cement sheet.

Learning outcomes

KNOWLEDGE:
- Well Integrity
- Pressure conditions in sedimentary formations.
- Equipment for closing in and later for killing of kicking wells.
- Different killing methods.
- Gas behavior in mud at static and dynamic conditions.
- Safety aspects for deep water drilling.

SKILLS:
- Predict overburden, pore and fracture pressure.
- Recognize different signs and parameter values when a high pressure zone is drilled into.
- How to safely close-in a kicking well.
- How to kill a well in different problematic situations including deep water drilling.

GENERAL COMPETENCE:
Evaluate safety aspects in planning and execution of a drilling operation.

Teaching methods

Lectures and compulsory exercises. The lectures will be held in English if international master's students attend. If the teaching is given in English, the examination papers will be given in English only. Students are free to choose Norwegian or English for written assessments. If there is a re-sit examination, the form of assessment may be changed from written to oral examination.
