About this course

Content

Seismic data acquisition. Seismic sources (land and marine), sensors and recording equipment. Environmental aspects related to seismic acquisition. Borehole seismic. Seabed seismic. Seismic processing. Three-dimensional seismic exploration. Seismic imaging techniques and analysis of seismic data.

Learning outcomes

Ingress: The students should know how seismic data are acquired, processed and analyzed.

Knowledge: The students should understand the basic theory and principles of seismic data acquisition, and how to assess critical acquisition parameters. They should know the key steps in seismic processing, and finally know how the final processed data are used in exploring the earth's subsurface i.e. exploration and production of hydrocarbons. The students should also have good knowledge of software used for acquisition, processing and analysis of seismic data and a clear understanding of modern computational resources and their limitations, and basic knowledge of machine learning techniques used in seismic processing. Also basic knowledge of how seismic data acquisition impacts marine life and how to mitigate the effects is expected.

Skills: The students should know how to derive and apply basic equations that are used in acquisition and processing of seismic data. They should know how to perform a simple seismic processing of seismic field data. Fundamental procedures for how to mitigate environmental impact of data acquisition should be known.

General competence: The students should understand the basic principles used in seismic imaging, and realize similarities and differences to for instance medical imaging techniques. They should learn how to use self-critical analysis methods and to present scientific work to others.

Teaching methods
