About this course
Content
The course aims to provide students with basic seismic interpretation skills. This involves key elements such as
- Seismic acquisition and processing principles,
- Seismic-well tie,
- Basic seismic interpretation techniques,
- Structural and stratigraphic interpretation using seismic data,
- Map generation,
- Velocities and depth conversion,
- Seismic amplitude and attribute analysis,
- Play and prospect evaluation.
Learning outcomes
Ingress: The students are introduced to methodologies and strategies for interpretation of 2D and 3D seismic data. They will develop basic skills in structural and stratigraphic interpretation. In addition, the students will acquire basic knowledge about seismic amplitude reflections from lithological boundaries within the subsurface.
Knowledge: The students should know state-of-the-art interpretation techniques for 2D and 3D seismic data. They should know structural analysis and seismic stratigraphy as methods for interpretation. They should have basic theoretical knowledge about seismic reflections from geological boundaries and have practical skills in performing amplitude versus offset/angle analysis.
Skills: The students should be able to use a seismic interpretation software for 2D and 3D seismic. They should also be able to calculate volumes and understand the principles of risking prospects. They will be able to perform regional seismic mapping in addition to detailed seismic prospect evaluation.
General competence: Students will be able to interpret seismic where the aim is to define and develop prospects for carrying out detailed reservoir characterization.
Teaching methods
Lectures and exercises. The exercises allow the students to apply their theoretical knowledge gained from course lectures through practical interpretation tasks on paper and workstations. The exercises are either solved through team work (3-5 students) or induvidually. The exercises comprise regional seismic interpretation of 2D data and prospect evaluation through the use of 3D seismic data. The course is given in English. The course is evaluated by a reference group.
