About this course

Content

Methodology of product design and development.
Initiating Projects, strategic Design, Project Planning, Project Managment. Concept Development. Evaluation criterias for concepts on different stages of the development process.
Small-scale marketing within the context of how to run a design consultancy. Planning and budgetting of Consultancy Services.
The strategic design part of the module, which addresses "Product Planning and Management" issues, is prescriptive in nature, emphasising on the use of selected stretgic design tools and methods. Advanced design thinking models will be used as a fundamental context for the choice of design processes.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge:
Within the context of teamwork and consultancy practice, candidates has gained a good understanding on how to convincingly propose strategic incremental or radical product /service proposals to their collaborating companies. Besides that, the candidates is able to materialise the proposals into detailed design concepts, which are coherent with the product strategy part.

Skills:
Through a main design project, the candidate has mastered processes, methods and techniques to facilitate Product Planning and Management, as well as acquired skills in project management, networking, and communication. "Social", "Technological", "Economic", "Environmental" and "Political" (STEEP) issues, which are driven by culture and implicating external goal finding, are a central theme in this course. Additionally, candidates are able to objectively and persuasively communicate their product proposals and design concepts to their collaborating companies, as if they are professional design consultants. Collaboration with- small and medium-size Norwegian companies is an essential part of this course.

General qualifications:
Candidates have good knowledge, expertise and skills in product planning and management activities in real-life industrial collaborative strategic design projects.
Besides this, candidates are able to use advanced design methods and contribute in the area of design thinking.

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars, project work and optional model making. Students are expected to give a final presentation of their work at the end of the semester.
