Product Design 4 - Form and Function

The course is based on a project concerning human - product interaction within a specific context. Skills in systems, methodological and visual thinking as well as communication are trained throught structured reasoning and drawing. The relationship between aesthetics, ergonomics, technology and businees is emphasised within a industrial design context. Relevant processes, methods and reflection over the designers' way of thinking are presented in lectures.

Knowledge: Candidates have good practice-based understanding of structured design processes and methods

Skills: Through a main design project, candidates have mastered analytical and problem solving skills using a range of design methods and techniques. More specifically, they are capable to define the problem, set op requirements, generate ideas and concepts, perform a concept selection and finally detail and materialise the final design. Hereby, the interaction between user functions, technical functions, market considerations and aesthetics will be emphasized. Additionally, candidates are familiar with basic systems and context development as part of their basic training in "Design Thinking".

General qualifications: After completion of this course, candidates are able to systematically design a product based on a structured problemsolving-driven design process. He or she is well versed in using various methods and techniques, which support the different stages of the design process.

Lectures, project work, model making, individual tutoring, approx. 5 submissions to a portfolio.
