Design 1 - Introduction

This course provides an introduction to design as concept and profession as well as design history. Through lectures, exercises and project work, the students are introduced to the designer's ways of thinking, working, use of basic drawing techniques and other visual communication techniques. Design history, with a separate set of lectures and exam, is part of the course. Mandatory workshop course (wood) is also included. Design 1contains a separate module for self-reflection on sustainability, as part of the sustainability vision of NTNUs technology degrees.

The candidates have

• A basic understanding of design as a concept and as a profession.

Skills:

The candidates

• have gained training in various practical techniques for developing, visualizing, disseminating and evaluating ideas.
• are able to conduct an iterative design process applied to products (select and justify the use of introduced techniques and concepts).

General competence:

The candidates

• are able to use various practical techniques to carry out a design process.
• are familiar with general design history.
• have passed mandatory workshop course (wood).

Lectures, exercises, project work and exam. Most exercises include oral presentation of the results. The introductory course "Teknostart" and workshop course (wood) are integrated as mandatory parts of the course.
