Bachelor thesis

The Bachelor's thesis shall address problem formulations connected to the maritime field. The thesis shall prepare students for practical problem situations and challenges in shipping, maritime companies, maritime public agencies, or existing R&D work at NTNU.

Assignment format: Students shall complete the assignment in groups of 3 students. The students' preferences for forming groups will be the starting point. Students who do not find a group will be assigned to one.

The group is responsible for jointly proposing the scope of the assignment. The deadline for this is November 15th. The program leader coordinates the work of finding a main supervisor. The assignment text is developed by the group in collaboration with advisors and approved by the program leader.

Knowledge:

The student

• has knowledge that contributes to investigating concrete professional issues within the maritime field
• has broad knowledge of central themes, theories and issues related to the bachelor's thesis
• has broad knowledge of research methods and scientific methodology within the maritime field
• can independently update their knowledge, both through literature searches and contact with professional communities

Skills:

The student

• can solve relevant theoretical, technical and practical issues
• can use methods, simulators or other tools that are relevant to the project and that contribute to analytical, structured, goal-oriented and innovative work
• can use relevant research methods for data collection and analysis
• can find, critically assess, use and reference relevant information, literature and subject matter
• can present and discuss subject matter in a way that illuminates the problem formulation
• can work in teams and solve challenges related to project work in collaboration with group members
• can reflect on their own professional practice and adjust it under supervision

General competence:

The student

• can communicate maritime professional knowledge both in writing and orally
• has a conscious relationship to their own knowledge and skills
• has respect for other fields and professionals
• can contribute to interdisciplinary work and adapt their own professional practice and team qualities to the current project
• is aware of environmental, ethical and economic consequences
• can plan and carry out similar projects, both alone and together with others

Supervision:

The department appoints one or more supervisors, internal and/or external. The students receive tailored supervision throughout the project period.

Mandatory activities

• Project outline with description of topic, progress plan and problem formulation must be approved by supervisor/program leader by the specified deadline.
