About this course

Content

Definitions and terminology Geodetic basis, concepts and accuracy theory. Satellite-based systems (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and Compass) Public and private differential satellite navigation support systems (incl. RTK, SBAS, DARPS). Heading sensor and motion sensor. (Gyro, FOG, RGL, MRU etc.) Basic hydroacoustics. Review of Acoustic Systems (HPR / HiPAP) The FanBeam and CyScan laser systems. The microwave systems ARTEMIS, RADius and RadaScan. Reference systems in DP. Weighting, alarms and pitfalls

  • have a thorough insight into different forms of coordinate systems used during positioning of ships and rigs
  • have a thorough insight into the systems 'operating principle and weaknesses
  • have a thorough knowledge of conditions that can affect the systems' performance

  • assess performance position reference systems used in dynamic positioning
  • predict expected conditions that may affect the system's performance
  • diagnose the most common errors that may occur on the systems account for interface and data flow between different systems

  • have a conscious relationship to own knowledge and skills related to the subject area

Teaching methods

Pedagogical methods: Lectures, simulator and lab. exercises. Mandatory work requirements: Attendance is mandatory at all lectures and exercises.
