The course covers the requirements for practical knowledge in STCW Chapter II, section A-II / 2, function Navigation at the management level within the courses listed below.

• Nautical publications (charts, pilot descriptions, tide tables, current atlases, beacons, etc.)
• Use of ECDIS as an aid in coastal navigation and open waters
• Use of radar to secure coastal sailing
• Use of Rate of Turn (ROT) and ship maneuver characteristics
• Understanding of the ship's maneuvering characteristics and standard maneuver tests
• Groundwater and canal effect / Operation in narrow waters and canals
• Mooring and anchoring arrangement
• Towing and use of tugboats
• Operation in ice (Polar Code Basic course)
• Planning of overseas and coastal voyages
• Risk assessment, as well as assessment of necessary margins for safe sailing
• Ships logbooks and documentation of the passage
• Establishment of Watchkeeping bridge routines
• VTS, pilotage services, monitoring and reporting regimes
• Application of Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972 (COLREGs)

By completing this a diploma for completing Costal Navigation training for Cadet Pilot exemption diploma is issued.

The candidate is to demonstrate:

Prepare:

• Voyage planning for all conditions, including coastal waters, and open sea
• Watchplan for safe manning for the entire voyage
• Reporting in accordance with prevailing reporting schemes
• A passageplan that can be used for the entire bridge crew
• Briefing before operations

Planning:

• Costal passage and open water voyage in ECDIS
• Costal passage, where all limitations including tidal conditions and current is evaluated
• Of activities in connection to the normal operation of the vessel
• Reporting in accordance with relevant regulations in the waters of the voyage
• A complete voyage with a watchplan that ensures safe manning at all times

Execute:

• Complete passageplan as a means of safeguarding the passage in ECDIS
• Voyage in accordance with current regulations for the relevant sailing area
• Voyage in accordance with the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972 (COLREGs)
• Actively utilize propeller and rudder to safeguard the voyage in accordance with current area and COLREGs
• Apply correct tools for quality assessment of the vessels position in accordance with the passageplan
• Make correct reports in accordance with relevant regulations
• Tidal calculations for the current passage
• Standard maneuver trials

Evaluate

• Which tools are best to ensure the passage at all times
• Quality of own passageplan - and documentation of the voyage
• The quality of position input to ECDIS by means of best suitable tools
• Own development of abilities

The course consists of a series of simulators and lab exercises, exercise plan will be published at semester start.

All exercises must be completed and approved to sit for the exam.
