Navigation 3 - Navigation Control and shiphandling (written exam)

This course covers the requirements to theoretical and practical knowledge as given in STCW Chapter II, section A-II/2, Navigation at Management Level as listed.

• Nautical publications (charts, pilot descriptions, tide
tables, tidal current atlas, light lists, etc.)
• ECDIS
• Rate of Turn (ROT) and parallell indexing (PI)
• Maneuver characteristics ander standard maneuver tests
• Shallow water and canal effects -Operations in restricted
water and canals
• Berthing- and anchor arrangements, including offshore
anchoring
• Towing and use of tugs
• Operation in ice-covered waters
• Planning of ocean- and coastal passages
• Risk assessment and evaluation of safety mergins
• Logbooks and documentation of the voyage
• Watch routines and bridge procedures, including use of pilot
• VTS and pilot services, surveillance- and reporting regimes
• Emergency situations and naval cooperations
• Colregs and different collision cases

-have general knowledge of different marine operations, inclusive offshore operations
-apply and assess nautical publications needed for planning the route
-apply methods for securing the voyage, by means of electronic instruments and visual observations
-assess and calculate influence of shallow water
-assess and calculate environmental impact and the need of tugs
-explain methods and procedures for berthing and anchoring
-assess dangers related navigation in ice covered waters
-explain different reporting regimes and documentation of the voyage
-maneuver and handle different types of ships under all types of conditions
-calculate effect of tides on underkeel clearance
