Content

The atmosfhere, pressure, temperature and water content Clouds and fog Wind and windsystems Meteorological organizations and forcasting Interpretation of weather charts Weather routing Tidal theory Ocean geography Physical properties of the water Ocean currents Ocean waves Different ice types Ocean research As a paramount objective the course should make the student able to consider metocean conditions relevant for the voyage.

Learning outcomes

Learning outcomes - Knowledge: shall have in-depth knowledge in meteorology and oceanography in accordance with relevant parts of STCW chapters II / 1 and II / 2 and STCW code A-II / 1 function "Navigation at the operational level¿ and STCW code A-II / Function 2: Navigation at the management level

Learning outcomes - Skills: The candidate must be able to solve theoretical, technical and practical problems related to meteorology and oceanography for conducting sailing, must be able to use methods, simulators and other tools that form the basis for operating ships, safely and efficient and contribute to both analytical, structured, targeted and innovative work. must be able to interpret different types of weather maps and describe expected weather conditions. must be able to show general knowledge of meteorological and oceanographic processes. must be able to use different forms of relevant statistical information in assessment of travel planning be able to use weather and ice maps for optimal and safe routing of ships e different methods for calculating tides and safe clearance under and over the ship.

Learning outcomes - Competence: must be aware of the environmental, ethical and economic consequences of maritime transport in both a local and global life cycle perspective and the ability to realize this knowledge through his or her professional career at sea. shall actively participate in professional discussions and have the ability to share their knowledge and experiences with others and contribute to the development of good practice within the subject area.
