About this course

Content

The fundamental thermodynamic, kinetic and technological base as applied to refining of metals is introduced The origin of particles and impurities in metals is discussed. Issues regarding production, refining and recycling are very different for different metals depending on their chemical properties. Processes, unit operations and technology status for recycling of steel, aluminum and WEEE as well as refining of aluminum and silicon for solar cells are used as examples in the course.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this course the student will be able to: - Give an overview of available refining processes in general for aluminum and for solar cell quality Si. - Perform basic thermodynamic and kinetic calculations for removal of dissolved elements and non-metallic impurities from liquid metal. - Identify and describe effects of dissolved elements on different properties of metal products. - Explain various aspects of importance for inclusion removal and how this can be applied to achieve pure metals. - Formulate and analyse challenges for recycling of metals.

Teaching methods

Lectures, exercises and excursion. The course is held in English. If the teaching is given in English the Examination papers will be given in English only. Students are free to choose Norwegian or English for written assessments. Expected use of time: Lectures: 45 hours, Own work: 125 hours, Exercises: 30 hours. Total: 200 hours
