About this course
Content
Relations between work, heat, energy and enthalpy including entalpy balances for technical processes. Entropy and Gibb's energy, kriteria for spontanity/equilibrium and relations between state variables; thermochemical data, reference states, influence of pressure and temperature. Stability diagrams for one-component systems. Gassmixtures, homogeneous reactions in gas phase and reactions between a gas and pure condensed phases. Gibb's phase rule and stability diagrams for 2- and 3-component systems. Condensed solutions and phase diagrams for ideal and regular binary systems. Lever rule, types of univariant equilibria and crystallisation paths.
Learning outcomes
Provide an introduction to basic thermodynamic principles and their application in description of energy conversion and phase relations in materials technology. Excercises provide training in solving practical problems involving these principles and their application.
Teaching methods
Lectures and excercises. 75% of the excercises are mandatory. Portifolio evaluation is used, and is based on final written exam (80%) and a midtterm test (20%). If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
