About this course

Content

Basics in regard to Aluminium physical metallurgy, e.g. alloy systems, heat treatments, strength and microstructure, opportunities and limitations, competitors and why (steels, titanium, etc.). Basic mechanics;stress and strain; yielding criteria; constitutive equations; work hardening; plastic instabilities, dynamic strain aging; necking and formability; formability testing and FLD; anisotropy, R-values; strain rate effects, Zener Holloman; frictional effects, strain paths, hydroforming; geometrical tolerances, superplasticity; forming processes; extrusion; forging; profile forming.

Learning outcomes

The course gives basic knowledge to the student in regard to formability of metals and the corresponding forming technologies. The aluminium alloys are in focus throughout the course.

Teaching methods

Lectures, exercises, laboratory exercises, self study reports, industry excursions and lectures given by industrial experts. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
