About this course

Content

Faraday's law for electrolysis. Electrical conducticity, mobility and transport numbers in aqueous electrolytes. Potential/pH diagrams. Current and mass transport for electrode reactions. Standard and reversible reduction potentials, the activity concept, concentration cells, thermodynamic data. The concept of overvoltage. Electrode kinetics; the relations between current density and overvoltage for electrode reactions controlled by charge transfer and diffusion. Short introduction to electrochemical processes; electrolysis, corrosion, batteries, fuel cells, solar cells.

Learning outcomes

The aim is for the students to achieve basic understanding of fundamental knowledge of electrochemical thermodynamics and kinetics.

Teaching methods

Lectures and problem solving. 2/3 of the problems must be approved to qualify for the exam. Important electrochemical principles are introduced in laboratory demonstration experiments. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
