About this course
Content
Chemical equilibria with important industrial examples, analytical chemistry, electrochemistry with examples from industrial electrolysis processes, reaction kinetics. The laboratory part of the course contains classical qualitative and quantitative analysis. Statistical treatment of experimental data is introduced.
Learning outcomes
The subject provides continuation of General Chemistry with emphasis on chemical equilibria, electrochemistry and kinetics with examples from industrial processes. The laboratory course contains preparative inorganic chemistry, and qualitative and quantitative analysis with examples on the use of instrumental methods. At completion the students are expected to be able to solve equilibrium problems and estimate analytical accuracy (titrations) by combining graphical methods, relevant equations, approximations and chemical knowledge. They are expected to be able ti apply basic electrochemical principles and demonstrate knowledge about some industrially important electrochemical processes, as well as to be able to use basic kinetic theory to determine reaction order and rate rate.
Teaching methods
Lectures and written exercises of which 50% must be approved. The laboratory course has to be approved to give access to the final exam. The final grade is given by weighting the examination grade by 75% and the grade from the laboratory course by 25%. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may change from written to oral.
