About this course
Content
Todays ship and offshore designs becoming more and more complex and demanding as well as unique. The latter does often not allow for a safe extrapolation of empirically derived methods to the new design. Hence, direct simulation methods are more and more used to determine the feasibility of the design alternative – thus the design is based on a simulation, which is fully integrated into the design process at best. The course will start with an introductory phase identifying a generic structure to be used as an example throughout the course for the assignment. The theory phase will cover the basic modelling principles and first-order principal based analysis techniques and thereby supports the individual assignments to allow a straightforward implementation of lecture contents. The modelling, analysis and optimisation will be carried out using a Inventor, ANSYS and MATLAB.
Learning outcomes
Can identify the requirements for simulation-based design of large complex ship and offshore structures in terms of: CAD/CAE tools as well as first-principal based analysis methods. Basic finite element analysis can be carried out from a basic CAD model and thereby required design modifications can be justified.
Teaching methods
The topics are taught based on an individual project assignment with supporting seminars and lectures and it is your responsibility to follow up on them in the given time frame.
