About this course

Content

This course aims to support the students with the introduction and background of how to describe marine fluid flow, and to give the theoretical methods which can be used to calculate regular waves, forces from regular waves and motion response to regular waves. We also give the introduction and background of resistance and propulsion by explaining the methods to calculate total resistance of ships, resistance components, behavior of foils and propellers, propulsion systems, cavitation, powering and utilization of experimental techniques. Exercises is used to focus on important issues.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student should be capable to demonstrate basic understanding, explain basic principles and perform simple calculations and estimates with - Linear wave theory, assumptions we do on and under the free surface - Wave forces and moments on fixed and floating structures, small and large volume structures - Hydrodynamic added mass and damping - Transfer function for motion of floating structures and combination with wave spectra - Natural periods and characteristics of oscillating systems on the free surface - Resistance and powering of ships based on model experiments and empirical formulas - Lift on a foil And to be able to choose the main parameters for a propeller through calculation of propeller efficiency, utilizing momentum theory, and understand cavitation.
