About this course

Content

Introduction to marine machinery systems - technology, design, performance and control of auxiliary systems. Introduction to thermal engineering basics focusing on heat transfer and heat exchanger systems, thermofluid systems in general , pumps and liquid transfer systems, hydraulic systems, steam and HVAC systems plus energy efficiency, waste heat recovery and energy harvesting.

Learning outcomes

After completing this course, the student should be able to demonstrate knowledge to

  • Understand and assess the importance of technology, heat transfer and thermofluid systems in relation to safe and economical energyefficient design, operation and control of marine machinery systems in general and auxiliary systems particularly.
  • Understand and carry out calculations for heat transfer mechanisms in thermal systems relevant for marine applications.
  • Understand, design and evaluate heat exchanger systems, their operation and control in marine applications.
  • Understand, design and evaluate basic hydraulic systems, their operation and control in marine applications.
  • Understand and carry out design and performance calculations for pump- and liquid transfer systems, steam- and HVAC systems and possibly other novel systems of interest of relevance when new technology is introduced.
  • Understand, design and evaluate options for solutions and technology for waste heat recovery and energy harvesting in marine machinery systems.
