About this course

Content

This course contains the foundation for design of floating fish farms. The content is divided in three areas that all needs to be understood in order to design safe, reliable and sustainable floating fish farms:

1. Understanding the industry and the production process: Relevant species, fish welfare and biological criteria, production cycle, laws and regulations, environmental impacts, HSE.
2. Understanding the structure: Layout of industrial aquaculture facilities, calculation of force and response in waves and currents, use of numerical models and scaled experiments.
3. Understanding the site: Site survey, wave and current exposure in the coastal zone, sea load statistics, design parameters, use of numerical models and measurements.

Learning outcomes

After having completed the course the students shall have obtained basic skills necessary in design of floating fish farms. They should have an overall understanding of: 1) The aquaculture industry and the production process in a fish farm, 2) the behavior of typical aquaculture structures in wave and current, and 3) the process of site survey and calculation of design parameters for wave and current exposure.

Teaching methods

The course includes class lectures, exercises, project group work and excursions to commercial sea farms and/or farm equipment producers.
