About this course

Content

Modeling of missions and operations for determining customer requirements. Design processes adapted to special vessels - Accelerated Business Development (ABD) and system based ship-design. Introduction to engineering design theories, and design theories applied at other universities. Conceptual design based on parametric analysis. Development of function architecture and functional requirements. Iterations between customer needs, functional requirements and design parameters (CN-FR-DP). Modularization and product platforms. Methods for decision making under uncertainty for special vessels: Trade-Space Exploration, Epoch-Era Analysis, Design Structure Matrices. Data analysis applied on AIS data for operational pattern analysis. Simulation based life-cycle performance analysis for operability, fuel efficiency and economy. Introduction to risk based ship design, with a probabilistic damage stability case - special vessel requirement.

Learning outcomes

The course shall enable the students for fast-track concept design of advanced special vessels, apply advanced methods and be introduced to research-based state-of-art in the design and verification process, with due regard for the boundary conditions and functional requirements governing special vessels and special vessel operations.

Teaching methods

The course consists of two main parts: 1. Lectures, videolectures and colloquial group based discussions where student groups or lecturer introduce themes for discussions. 2. A team (group) based fasttrack vessel design project, following the procedure of the Accelerated Business Development (ABD) approach from Ulstein International. The ABD approach is a logistics-based fasttrack ship design approach. Ideal group size is three to four students.
