About this course
Content
The course covers core methods applied in the design of complex marine systems, focusing on methods for systems analysis, product development, decision support, simulation and optimization. The course provides an overview of important design related decision problems on fleet, vessel and main systems level, and how mathematical models can be developed and solved in order to find good solutions. This includes the application of linear and non-linear optimization, integer programming, network problems, decisions under uncertainty, simulation, utility theory and selection problems. Realistic, industry relevant cases will be solved through assignments, with a focus on mathematical modeling and the use of software tools and programming in python.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the students shall be able to find good solutions to important marine technology design problems systems analysis methods, mathematical models and corresponding solution methods. This includes: - Acquiring a fundamental understanding of the nature of design, and the difference between design and analysis - Be able to formulate core decision problems in marine design as a mathematical model, discuss the characteristics and behavior of this model, and selecting an appropriate solution method for the problem - Be able to formulate and solve linear optimization problems using the Simplex methods, and understand how post solution analysis can be used to gain additional insight into the original problem - Formulate and solve simple integer and binary problems, related to fleet size and mix, equipment configuration and arrangements - Be able to formulate and solve non linear optimization problems, primarily related to hull form design - Understand core principles related to decisions under uncertainty and real options - Be able to apply utility and value based methods for selection problems - Develop simulation models that reflects the operational behavior pattern for a vessel as part of a fleet or transportation chain, and use this model to support design related decisions.
Teaching methods
Learning is based on both ordinary classes and assignments. The assignments focus on applying methods using databased tools.
