About this course
Content
The course consists of four themes that partly are given in parallel, integrated with each other, and which together form a whole. The first issue includes an introduction to the Norwegian maritime industry with a description of the marine ocean and marine resources, the marine industrial cluster, administration, legislation and regulations. It furthermore describes the application of marine technology in vessels and offshore activites. The second theme is related to important issues in the marine technology that is illustrated through lectures and a comprehensive training program consisting of laboratory activities, site visits and an excursion aboard a ship. The third theme is an introduction to the model experiments on towing resistance and analysis of results using Matlab. The fourth theme focuses on study skills, communication, report writing, presentation skills and technical drawing.
Learning outcomes
Courses Marine Technology introduction and Marine technology 1, 2, 3 and 4 together enable the students to describe and understand the marine disciplines and carry out engineering related to design, construction and operation of ships, platforms and other marine systems. They will also give students a proper set of methods and tools to perform such work, as well as training in teamwork and communication.
After completing the course the student should be able to:
- Understand and describe the entities that make up the marine industry, and how these interact.
- Understand and describe how the marine disciplines interact.
- Understand and apply marine technical terminology and language, oral and written.
- Understand and use technical descriptions and drawings of marine vessels.
- Understand and map the interaction of technical systems on board marine vessels.
- Be able to calculate the initial stability of marine vehicles.
- Be able to perform simple tasks in welding and cutting on a lathe.
- Have a comprehensive understanding of safety in laboratory work.
- Have a basic understanding of the resistance of ships, and how this can be determined
- Be able to perform laboratory experiments in an efficient and safe manner, and analyze and evaluate the results from these.
- Be able to plan a project in collaboration with other students, and implement in accordance with established framework and time.
- Be able to write project reports by scientific template.
- Ability to orally present project in an orderly and efficient manner, within the stipulated time frame.
Teaching methods
Lectures, labwork, drafting assignments and presentations to be carried out as teamwork. Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. The portfolio includes an oral exam (60%) and exercises (40%). The results for the parts are given in %-scores, while the entire portfolio is assigned a letter grade. All lectures and activites are in Norwegian, and students must speak fluent Norwegian.
