Tribology

Tribology is the science of interacting surfaces in relative motion, and involves mechanics, design, physics, chemistry, material science and mathematics. The main subjects are friction, wear and lubrication. Engine components: bearings, gears, brakes, seals, chambers, piston rings, cylinders/pistons, tyres/roads, lubrication systems. Computer hardware: tape/guiding, tape/read-write heads. Sports: ski/snow, skates/ice. Forming: wear, lubrication, coating of stressed surfaces, surface roughness. Machining: ploughs, horrows, guarriers, rock drilling equipment. Bio: biological joints, teeth, ecological effects of lubrications. Mathematical discussions will be used for lubrication, friction and wear theory.

To give the students knowledge on the underlying phenomenoms in tribology, on use, on problems and on methods and tools to solve these.

Lectures, study groups, excercises wiht laboratory work. The lectures and exercises are in English when students who do not speak Norwegian take the course. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
