About this course

Content

This course is equal to TMT4255 Corrosion and Corrosion protection.

Electrochemical basis of corrosion: Thermodynamics, potential-pH diagram. Kinetics of corrosion reactions: Polarisation curves, mixed potential theory, passivity, effect of mass transfer. Types, causes and propagation of corrosion. Effect of metallurgical, mechanical and environmental factors. Quantitative estimation of corrosion rates. Description of mechanisms for types of corrosion for different metal and environment combinations. Corrosion protection: Electrochemical methods, inhibitors, surface treatment, effect of material properties, materials selection, design. Corrosion properties of important construction materials. Test methods. Corrosion Management including corrosion monitoring. Sustainability through reduced corrosion of equipment and components.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge: The candidate has knowledge about:

  • The theoretical fundament for why corrosion initiates on metallic materials in water containing electrolytes including thermodynamic, electrode kinetic, mass transport and passivity.
  • Different types of corrosion.
  • Different methods to reduce the probability for initiation of corrosion.
  • Corrosion Management including corrosion monitoring.

Skills: The candidate can:

  • Construct a Pourbaix diagram and explain how to use it.
  • Calculate corrosion rate for a metal under defined conditions.
  • Differ between and describe characteristic features with different corrosion forms; uniform, galvanic, pitting, crevice and stress corrosion cracking.
  • Propose different types of corrosion protective coatings for a structure.
  • Calculate number of anodes to protect a structure.
  • Select corrosion monitoring method(s) for defined applications

General competence: The candidate can:

  • Participate in a failure analysis group for a component with knowledge about corrosion.
  • Propose alternative materials or alternative ways to prevent corrosion for a new component or a production unit.
  • Knowledge about elements in a Corrosion management system. Insight into the role of corrosion protection for sustainable materials usage.

Teaching methods

Lectures, problem sets, laboratory work and semester project. Problem sets and laboratory work require basic use of data analysis tools such as plotting programs. Solutions to selected problem sets and assignments have to be found satisfactory to qualify for the final examination. The lectures are given in English. The examination papers will be given in English only. Students are free to choose Norwegian or English for written assessments.
