About this course

Content

Additive Manufacturing provides designers with unparalleled freedom to create highly complex geometries, that in turn enable light-weighting, reduced costs, rapid manufacturing, and part consolidation. This course presents the fundamental knowledge to re-design load-bearing components with added complexity and manufacture by additive manufacturing. This course will focus on:

Design for additive manufacturing. Additive manufacturing technologies. Limitations of different Additive manufacturing technologies. New product design opportunities by additive manufacturing. Mechanical properties of polymers, polymer composites, and metals for additive manufacturing. Cost and time optimization for additive manufacturing. Advanced product design through generative design. Estimation of component strength by simulations. Prototyping by additive manufacturing. Post-processing Techniques. Manufacturing by additive manufacturing. Quality assurance and product testing in additive manufacturing.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge: Basic knowledge about additive manufacturing technologies, design for additive manufacturing, advanced component manufacturing through generative design, estimation of mechanical properties of complex structures by simulations, and component destructive testing for product validation.

Skills: How to design and optimize products for Additive Manufacturing. Perform stress analysis using The Finite Element Method and digital analysis, tools such as Nastran solvers. How to use Slicer software for additive manufacturing. How to perform product validations and destructive testing of AM products.

General competence: Mechanical engineering of complex products for AM. Ability to report and present analyses, conduct experiments, analyze results, and develop conclusions.

Teaching methods

Lectures, exercises, written project task and written exam. The lectures will be conducted in English
