About this course

Content

The topic covers the basic topics and applications of fracture and notch mechanics. The fundamental concepts include linear and elastic-plastic fracture and notch mechanics. Local criteria for brittle fracture in metals are presented.

Emphasis is placed on the fundamental theoretical solutions and methods for stress and displacement analysis. Significant attention is given to crack and contact problems, singular asymptotic stress fields and three-dimensional problems. Emphasis is placed on engineering applications of elasticity and examples are generally worked through to final expressions for the stress and displacement fields in order to explore the engineering consequences of the results. Among the topics treated in the course advanced solutions are presented for the study of sharp and blunt V-notches in bidimensional and three-dimensional problems. The main local stress and energy parameters are also presented and discussed. The applications include fracture toughness testing of metals and failure assessment strategies in order to assess the failure of structures both under static and fatigue loading. High priority is given to computational fracture and notch mechanics (Williams and Fadle solution) and a course in computational mechanics on the FE codes ANSYS and ABAQUS are included as an important part of the topic.

Teaching methods

Lectures, exercises and finite element course on ANSYS and ABAQUS for fracture mechanics calculations. The lectures and exercises are in English when students who do not speak Norwegian take the course. If the teaching is given in English the examination papers will be given in English only. In this case the students also have to reply in English.
