About this course
Content
Ideas for mechanical products can be developed, communicated, and tested by means of software. A geometric model made by means of a CAD/CAM system will be at the centre of such processes.
The more important subjects are transformation matrices, curves and sculptured surfaces, data structures, and graphical user interfaces. Software for Internet communication is used in combination with geometric models to survey and control machines.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge:
Candidates are expected to obtain knowledge in:
- Essential principles for computers, computer programming and computer communication.
- Mathematics, information structures, and software for computer graphics and geometric modeling.
- Principles for surveillance, analysis, simulation, and control of moving machinery by means of software, including adoptions of vector-based mechanics.
Skills:
- Candidates are expected to know how to operate:
- The operating system “Linux” and the programming language “C++”.
- A geometric modeler.
- The “Qt” software library.
- Server / client technology.
General competence:
Candidates shall be able to:
- Participate in software development.
- Understand how software can support mechanical products.
Teaching methods
Central issues are lectured. Lectures are supported by compendia and a textbook. Computer based exercises are made for training in central issues, but they also give an introduction to software development with the language "C++" and the library "Qt" used for examples. The lectures and exercises are in English when students who do not speak Norwegian take the course. If the teaching is given in English the Examination papers will be given in English only. Students are free to choose Norwegian or English for written assessments.
